We honor the life and legacy of our dear friend and former Blackhawk Scholarship Fund President, Judy Slinger—a woman whose kindness, leadership, and unwavering dedication to education left a lasting impact on her community and all who knew her.
Born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, Judy devoted her life to learning and service. She earned her undergraduate degree in Special Education from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. Her passion for education culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education from the University of Denver, reflecting both her academic excellence and her lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
After marrying and starting a family, Judy moved to Boulder, Colorado, where she began teaching in the Boulder Valley School District. Her deep commitment to literacy and student success led her to become Director of Literacy, overseeing programs across 62 schools and inspiring countless students and educators.
Judy and her husband later relocated to Danville, California. There, she continued to serve with generosity and purpose in her community. As a Board Member—and later President—of the Blackhawk Scholarship Fund, Judy helped empower young women in financial need to pursue higher education. She also served on the Blackhawk Women’s Golf Association Board and was an active member of San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church, contributing to numerous committees, including the Preschool Commission, and serving as a Memorial Coordinator.
Judy lived with energy, positivity, and joy. She loved playing tennis, golf, and cards, and her spirited competitiveness made her both a fun and formidable companion. She will be remembered for her warmth, optimism, intelligence, and the thoughtful conversations that encouraged others to think more deeply.
The Blackhawk Scholarship Fund is honored to establish the Judy Slinger Memorial Scholarship, created to celebrate the life and legacy of a truly remarkable leader, educator, and friend. Judy devoted her life to expanding opportunities for others and believed wholeheartedly in the power of education to change lives.
In the months following her passing, we experienced an extraordinary outpouring of love, receiving over $43,000 in Judy’s memory—a testament to the profound difference she made in the lives of so many. In response to this generosity, the Judy Slinger Memorial Scholarship was established as a separate, distinguished award, presented annually to a current BSF scholarship recipient who best reflects Judy’s love of learning, commitment to service, and desire to make a meaningful impact.
Through this scholarship, Judy’s legacy will live on— a lasting tribute that will continue to support future scholars and carry forward her legacy of compassion, leadership, and belief in the power of education.
